Preferences “fine tune” the application environment for the user and include: Colours and Print options; Grid Reference options; Pan and Zoom options; Area Selection options; Miscellaneous options; Text Editor and highlighting options; and Board Simulation options.

Users are likely to want to change the default Grid colour and display options from the defaults of grey and dots. Selecting a Grid colour of a pale blue, or pale green and using Lines can be good preferences to set.

Zoom in and out use a default factor of 2 but fractional values, like 1.5 can be specified, if required. The schematic page window will scroll by the scroll amount, default 5%, once an object, like a part gets dragged to the displayed boundary of the page.

Area selection may be made by dragging a window around objects. Any objects that intersect the selection rectangle will be selected by default but the Area Selection options can be changed to only select objects that are fully enclosed by the selection rectangle.

Designs start from the Design Template defined by Options>Design Template. Whilst the “defaults” from the Design Template will remain set in the design file after creation, the “defaults” can be overridden by editing the design. The Design Template determines the Fonts used in the design, which Title Block and properties are used (if any), the Page Units and Size, the Grid Reference settings, how Hierarchy is handled (usually left as the default), and SDT Compatibility which can be safely ignored.
