What does a Bias Point Simulation do?

A Bias Point Simulation applies the various sources and runs a simulation until the circuit reaches a “steady state”. In this case, any charging of capacitors, for instance, will have completed when the Bias Point Simulation results have been calculated. Other Analysis Types will typically start with a Bias Point calculation before the “main” simulation runs.

Bias Point results are available in the Output File and as Bias Markers on the schematic, if enabled. The simulation results, “Probe”, window that opens won’t list any results since the Bias Point only gets one set of results for the simulation.

 

Simulation Profile

The Simulation Profile allows the Analysis Type: Bias Point; DC Sweep; AC Sweep; Transient to be specified. only the Bias Point is considered in this section, the other simulation types will be covered later in the course. The Configuration Files allow other files to be associated with the Simulation Profile, such as Model Libraries.

 

Information in the Output File

If the simulation should fail, the Output file is where to go looking for information. The Output File can be opened from with Capture, PSpice>View Output File, or from the Probe window, View>Output File. If there are any issues with the syntax, there will be a “$” indicating where the parsing of the input failed.

 

Value Multipliers

Value Multipliers are as follows:

f – femto, 1e-15

p – pico, 1e-12

n – nano, 1e-9

u – micro, 1e-6

m – milli, 1e-3

k – kilo, 1e3

meg – mega, 1e6

g – giga, 1e9

t – tera, 1e12

Note: PSpice is not case sensitive so “Meg” is required for “mega”, also that specifying a capacitor value of 1F is a femto-Farad, not one Farad.
