What does Parametric Analysis do?

Parametric Analysis allows a circuit to be explored when a parameter is swept through a range of values. Types of parameter that can be varied are: Voltage source; Current source; Temperature; Model parameter; Global parameter. The Parametric Analysis is run in conjunction with another analysis type, DC Sweep, AC Sweep, or Transient. The Parametric Analysis runs multiple simulations stepping through the range of values specified.

 

Using a Global Parameter

Defining a Global parameter needs a PARAM part placed from the special.olb and then the new Parameter, or Parameters, needs to be added to the PARAM part as Properties and a default value specified. To get the Parameter applied to a Part in the Schematic, the Value is changed to be the name of the Property enclosed in curly brackets, like: {XVAL}. The default value specified when the property was added to the PARAM part will be used when the Parameter is not part of the Parametric Analysis, or the Parametric Sweep is disabled.

In the Simulation Profile, enable the Parametric Sweep option and specify the Variable to be swept and the range of values. Setting this up is similar to defining a DC Sweep.

 

Viewing Results

Once the simulation has been run, there will be a number of simulation results available to load into the Probe window, the default is that they are all selected, and adding traces will include values for “all” runs. It is also possible to select the results by specifying the @<run number> syntax, so that V(OUT)@1 will be the results for V(OUT) from run 1 and V(OUT)@35 will be the results for V(OUT) from run 35. It is also possible to build expressions using the results from different run numbers, to find the difference between them, for example.

 

Probe Window Cursors

The Probe Window has two cursors, cursor 1 is activated by the left mouse button on the trace symbol and cursor 2 is activated by the right mouse button.

With the cursor(s) activated, there are a number of search functions that can be used to find points in the waveform results, like “peak”.
